I skipped the first book because...well, I forgot.

This is the second novel in a trilogy about the Tearling which was written by Erika Johansen and first published in July of 2014. It has a 4.1/5 on Goodreads and a 4.6/5 on Barnes & Noble.

I quite enjoyed this novel because of the almost morbid out come. This book starts where the previous one ended off (Of course) and it follows Queen Kelsea Glynn as she attempts to protect her kingdom from the Red Queen and the Mortmesne army which is busy crossing the border between the two kingdoms on its way to destroy her kingdom because she refused to send slaves to them every month as her mother did before her.

However, Kelsea has other problems besides the imminent danger that comes from the Mort army. Her sapphires have gone dead, rendering her powerless and her mind keeps dragging her back in time, to before the Crossing, she lives out the life of Lily Mayhew in the past and in her waking hours she cannot seem to figure out why she is being shown what happened to Lily. Why is she so important?

She later discovers that Lily knew William Tear, founder of the Tearling, and she begins to take notice of the world around Lily as well as the people surrounding her.

Although she tries her best, Kelsea will have to sacrifice a great deal before she can even begin to save her kingdom.

Throughout the novel there is a type of urgency which is conveyed by how often the Mort army is mentioned and how often they note danger and fear in the residents of the Tearling.

I really enjoyed this book because of a reason which I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing but, I enjoyed this novel because of the strong lead female character, even though she had to lean on others sometimes she was overall a very strong woman and she protected her kingdom against all odds.

I give this book 4 stars and I hope you will/have enjoyed as much as I did.

Thanks for reading xx
