1. The Conjuring

The Conjuring is one of the most terrifying films that I have ever seen. I have seen it three times, (Yes, I know that I'm insane.) and every single time I am still scared.

The film was released in 2013 and got a 7.5/10 on IMDB and a 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and 100% on my horror meter.

The film is based on the real life account of Ed and Lorraine Warren who were demonologists and founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, which is the oldest ghost hunting group in New England.

Ed and Lorraine were called in to look at a house which had been bought by the Perron family during 1971 in Rhode Island where they experienced increasingly terrible events.

The film shows the events in a much more accelerated pace than how they really happened but it just adds to the intense fear that you feel for the family. The biggest problem that the family faced was not that they were being haunted in general, but that they were being haunted by a powerful demon.

For me the scariest part in the film is during a time when the Warren's are reviewing an interview which they conducted with Mrs Perron and instead of hearing her voice there is this terrible noise that comes from the tape. It gives me chills even now.

The film starred Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren), Patrick Wilson (Ed Warren) and Lili Taylor (Mrs Carolyn Perron) who all acted amazingly and truly brought this terrible event to life.

This movie still haunts my nightmares and anyone who hasn't seen it has never watched a good horror.

2. Sinister

Sinister was released in 2012 and received a 6.8/10 on IMDB and 63% Rotten Tomatoes. This film was especially scary to me because I have a younger sister (This will make sense after you've seen the film)

Sinister follows the story of a horror writer, Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) who moves himself and his family into a house where the entire family was murdered and the youngest child disappeared into thin air so that he can write a novel about it.

He becomes increasingly worried when strange things start happening and he keeps finding his office unlocked and new tapes of the previous families inside his box of evidence which weren't there before.

When he eventually decides to leave...It is too late.

I loved this film because of the original plot and monsters. I appreciated the intense moments which still make me cringe and the gore that is shown only adds to the entire experience.

Definitely one of the horror evenings.

3. Insidious

Insidious was first released in 2010 and it paved the way for 3 more movies in the Insidious universe.

The film was directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, it got 6.8/10 on IMDB and a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I only watched it last year (2019) during our annual Spooky Month Marathon, but I enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a watch.

The movie is about a family who moves into a new house with their three children, during the first few days their son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), is lured into the attic by some unknown force and falls into an unexplained coma the next day. After months of treatment with no results the family finally takes their son home, which is when strange paranormal activities begin to take place within their home.

The family is then referred to someone who can help them. When Elise Rainer (Lin Shaye) comes to inspect their home she discovers that it isn't their house that is being haunted it is their son. They are then faced with decisions to make in order to save the boy.

This movie had incredible acting with some of my favorites, like Patrick Wilson who plays the father. I loved the story line and the monsters weren't your typical every day scary, they were different and I think that is always a good sign.

4. Annabelle Creation

Annabelle Creation is one of the horrors that has stayed with me from the first time I saw it.

It came out in 2017 as a prequel to the first Annabelle movie, it was directed by David F. Sandberg and it received a 6.5/10 on IMDB and 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie is about six orphan girls who are looked after by Sister Charlotte (Stephanie Sigman) who come to stay with grieving parents who lost their daughter when she accidentally stepped in front of a car. Despite being warned by both the Sister and parents one of the orphans, Janice (Talitha Bateman), finds a way into Annabelle's locked room and discovers a porcelain doll in the deceased girls closet which she unwittingly unleashes to torment the residents of the house.

The demon which takes Annabelle's form begins to torment Janice and her peers before eventually possessing her, after she tries to destroy it by throwing it in the well, and creating even more chaos for the residents.

The acting in this movie was superb and I was absolutely terrified for most of it, barely ever stopping to take a breath. I would definitely have this on my to watch list if I hadn't already seen it.

5. Annabelle

Annabelle was the first horror movie that I ever watched and to this day I cannot look at a darkened stairwell without thinking of that movie.

The film was released in 2014 and directed by John R. Leonetti, it got a 5.4/10 IMDB and a disturbingly low 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie starts off with the Form family hearing screams from their neighbors house and expectant mother, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) sends her husband to go and help while she calls the police. The attackers turn out to be their neighbors daughter and her boyfriend who are part of a Satanic cult and the police end up shooting and killing the man while the daughter commits suicide inside the nursery while holding a porcelain doll which John Form (Ward Horton) gifted to his wife.

After this horrific event the Form family moves away into an apartment and Mia gives birth to a baby girl, however their happiness is short lived as Mia finds the doll which was hidden away and strange paranormal activities begin to happen around their home.

Mia then decides to try and get information on the doll which she believes to be the culprit and after finding out about the cult she requests the help of Father Perez who tries to help them.

This film tormented me and scared me half out of my wits after I had seen it, I will never forget about it since I lived right next to the stairs in the hostel when I watched and I was then left alone for that night, the only person in the girls hostel. I remember the absolute terror of that night and I resolved to never watch that movie again.

Little did I know that it sparked an interest in the Annabelle universe and that I would later have watched all of the movies that followed.

The acting in this movie was excellent as always and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes horrors. It truly is amazing.
