Spoilers: This is a new-ish film so this warning is legit.

Birds of Prey: And the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn is one of the few DC universe movies that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. The movie was released in February of 2020 and it has gotten a 6.1/10 on IMDB so far as well as a 60% on Metacritic.

You need to have watched Suicide Squad to understand a few small things about this movie but otherwise it can be watched on its own as the Joker and all the other villains from the previous movie do not feature in it at all.

The story revolves around Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) as she narrates the events leading up to her current predicament. She explains that her and the Mr. J have broken up again, this time for real and as everyone in Gotham finds out she becomes more and more pursued by terrible people who hate her and want her dead for various reasons. Since she no longer has the protection of the Joker she becomes an easy target and is soon captured by Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) who is also known as the Black Mask, and his henchmen who delight in cutting off their enemies faces, a bit graphic I suppose but definitely effective!

While Harley is busy narrating her part of the story we also get a look into some of the other key female characters as they go about their lives. Black Canary/ Dinah Lance (Jurnee Smollett) has a great back story and she is one of my favorite characters in this movie besides the obvious lead. We are also introduced to a Gotham city PD officer, Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) as well as a vigilante called the Crossbow Killer (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) for most of the movie. The characters were very well portrayed and I honestly loved that they didn't need any strong male heroes to come and save them.

In the end Harley teams up with various other bad ass women who also want Sionis dead for his crimes and they do their best to bring this about by kicking butt and taking names in an epic battle scene.

The film is getting a lot of backlash for not featuring the Joker in it as well as the fact that a woman has directed it (Cathy Yan) and it was also written by a woman (Christina Hodson) I however feel like it was a great movie, not only for the great action scenes but also for the outstanding acting that Robbie and her colleagues did as well as the great story that they gave Harley which really showed us why she was so crazy and it almost made you understand the terrible things that she had done.

It just shows you what being in love with a psycho will do to you.

Thanks for reading xx
