Maybe "Love" Means...

Maybe the concept of love is wrong.
Maybe nobody really knows what it means.
Think about it for a moment, how many people in this world can claim, without a doubt, that they selflessly love somebody, not for what that person can do for them or give them but for who that person is?
"I really don't know what 'I love you' means. I think it means 'Don't leave me here alone.'"-Neil Gaiman

I came across this quote this morning and I found it so profound that it set the gears in my head shifting.
Why do we love people?
Why do we love things?
Why do we use the word as if it is something light, to be used whenever?
Why do we assume that the word itself doesn't mean anything without the actions?
I for one am selfish.
Just like every other person in this world.
There are only a few people that I can say, without any hesitation, that I would do anything for.
For those people, my love might be something close to selflessness but when it really comes down to it, is it really?
When somebody asks you why you love someone your first instinct isn't to say something about who that person is but rather to say something about what that person does for you.

I have all of a sudden come to wonder why some people even bother saying the words.
I am not very old but I think I can be wise sometimes and when I think back on the years to how many people have told me they loved me and then compare that to how many people have proved it, I come to wonder why we even use the word at all.
Love can be shown in so many different ways that when we really try, we don't need to use the words to make someone understand how we feel.
They just know.
"Actions speak louder than words." -John Pym

This is undoubtedly one of the most profound quotes in the world because it is so true that it almost hurts.
If you aren't sure how somebody feels about you, observe how they treat you and you will soon have your answer.
Words can sometimes change your mind but in the end a persons actions are what truly lead to you caring for them or not.
If somebody was mean to you all the time you would probably give up on them, no matter how much you thought you loved them, where as if somebody was always nice to you, you may end up imagining feelings that were not there at all.
In short, I don't think any of us truly know what love is or what it entails but we cling to it, search for it and build it as best we can, because as John Green has said, it is the closest thing that we have to magic.
Thanks for reading xx
